Nutrition Education Program
Nutrition Education Project aims
to increase the likelihood low income children and families in San
Francisco will make healthy food choices and engage in daily physical
activity. Objectives Educate children in the benefits
of eating 5 A DAY and being physically active for 60 minutes a day
increase family awareness and participation related to nutrition and
physical activity.

Develop a citywide collaboration to support a healthy lifestyle change. Program
Elements Nutrition Education and Physical Activity Promotion
in the classroom: Model comprehensive nutrition lessons linked to the
following standards California Challenge Health Standards, Nutrition
Competencies and SFUSD academic standards. Provide demonstration and
tasting of healthy foods utilizing a mobile cooking cart. Promote physical
activity through modeling of games and activities. Teacher
Support Provide professional development on nutrition education
and physical activity promotion. Facilitate field trips to farms, farmer's
markets or gardens. Family Outreach Coordinate school
based Family Health Nights, provide parent and caregiver workshops,
publish quarterly nutrition newsletter, organize a school community
social marketing campaign promoting 5 A Day.
The
Nutrition Education Project is part of the California Nutrition Network
for Healthy, Active Families and is funded primarily by the United
States Department of Agriculture with additional funding from the
California Department of Food and Agriculture, The California Endowment,
and the Preventative Health and Human Services Block Grant of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
