Poetry Program
The Ulloa poetry program in collaboration with California Poets in the Schools (a state-wide writers in the schools program which is the largest of its kind in the U.S.) has helped Ulloa students produce vibrant and heartfelt poetry for over five years. Under the direction of CPITS poet- teacher, Susan Terence, and Ulloa teacher, Edna Kwan, students have produced poetry anthologies, participated in several city-wide poetry readings, won trophies for their writing from the SFUSD, and had their poems chosen for the CPITS state-wide anthology. Poetry lessons have tied in with the social studies curriculum (immigration, poetry from Angel Island, Native American, Chinese American, Latin American, and African American history); science (ocean studies, geology, plants, gardening, nutrition,); fine arts (painting, music); and have introduced students to 20th century world poets. With funding from the SF Ed. Fund grants, puppetry making, cooking, story-telling, theater, and playwriting, and other activities have been tied in with the poetry activities. This year the poetry program extended from grades 1-5, with the aim of expanding students' literacy and appreciation of multicultural literature and increasing students' joy in creative writing.
